CHAPTER TWO

“This is some seriously good shit.”

When I’d finally gotten home from my decorating, I’d just wanted to flop down on the couch with my remote and a bottle of wine while I scrolled through Netflix before giving up and rewatching Real Housewives of Wherever.

My roommate Nadina, treasure that she was, had an amazing clam pasta made when I got home, and we split a bottle of wine as we settled on Beverly Hills Housewives, our favorite.

I’d gotten through my office decorating in record speed, in part because I’d done it previous years, but also because Hector had been kind enough to not only help me find the stored boxes of decorations, but also have his guys help hang the crap.

After a couple hours, the newsroom looked pretty ‘Winter Wonderland-y’ to me. I’d even be able to save Marshall his twenty-five bucks, although I was thinking of stopping at Dollar Tree anyway to pick up more cheap Christmas shit just to tick him off.

I’d racked my brain while hanging ornaments and setting up reindeer, but I hadn’t come up with a good enterprise project to take advantage of whatever goodwill I might have earned for doing the holiday decorations.

Sprawled on the sofa with her feet in my lap, Nadina pointed at me when the housewives had just finished an epic screaming battle. “I know we were going to do our tree and stuff tomorrow, but I’ll understand if you aren’t up to it. You know, being strong-armed and all by the boss.”

Nothing like being forced to do Christmas shit to kill any holiday spirit.

The irony.

“Can I have a couple days?” I pleaded. “I promise my Scrooge-y-ness will be gone by then.”

She nodded, her eyes having grown wide as I shared the story of Marshall’s essentially bribing me by holding better work over my head.

That man seriously had my number. And he was willing to use it.

“So watcha gonna write about for this enterprise article? Can you choose anything you want?” she asked. “After you finish the Christmas train story, that is.”

She rolled her eyes in solidarity like the true friend that she was.

“I’m trying to figure that out, but my brain is so stuck in the human interest mode all I can think of are more stupid Christmas stories.”

Nadina tapped a finger on her chin. “That may not be such a bad thing, considering it is the season. What do you think about covering the Christmas party at that private club downtown?”

“What private club?” I asked.

She gave me her you know what I’m talking about face.

Only, I didn’t.

She scrolled through her phone. “You know, the club that sits above that super-expensive art gallery. Wait a minute.” She tapped away at her screen. “Here it is. I had it in my contact list. Helios.”

“I know that gallery, but what’s Helios? How did I not know about that?”

I wasn’t exactly the woman about town, but I thought I’d been to every bar and club at least once—on their cheap beer night, of course.
